I work as a master planner for a pharmaceutical company. Helping bring together a series of complex interconnected activities and decision process into a playbook of options for our organization.
Firstly I work with our supply network, understanding what is happening with our products, what are the volumes for existing products now and into the future and also what new products are on the horizon and what technologies and facilities do they need. We also look at the changes in particular markets and locations required for their manufacture. This helps us identify key strategies and scenarios to then plan out our real estate.

The production requirements are only part of the story – we need to know about changes in regulatory requirements, new technologies and so on to help us understand what that means.
Once we have this information we can then work with the sites, to understand the impact for them – what might increases in volume do to their ability to warehouse the raw materials and finished products, do they have the ability to QC test them. We explore where might we place more equipment for growth or if volumes decline how might we exit a facility to manage costs and energy use.
We also consider how to create and improve sites as great places to work, ensuring that we have enough parking, cycle stores, restaurants and coffee shops, faith facilities, etc.
Finally we have to understand the infrastructure of the site, availability of utilities, planning and licensing, amenities, etc.
bringing all this together helps the organisation understand how each site can flex in the future as the organisation grows.
